A professional development opportunity focused on evidence-based literacy instruction is coming up this summer. The 2024 Iowa Science of Reading Summit will be held July 18-19 in Cedar Rapids.
In partnership with the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Reading Research Center is organizing the second annual Iowa Science of Reading Summit. The summit will feature seven workshop tracks centered around the latest research, resources and best practices in literacy instruction. Iowa PK-12 teachers, administrators, instructional coaches and education professionals from public and accredited non-public schools are encouraged to attend this learning event. This event welcomes both educators who have been involved in a Science of Reading training and those who are new to the practice and interested in learning more.
The Iowa Science of Reading Summit will feature two national keynote speakers during the two-day event. Kareem Weaver, co-founder and executive director of FULCRUM, is noted for his partnership and advocacy to improve reading results for students. Additionally, Steve Dykstra, a psychologist with over 30 years of experience in children’s mental health, has been highly involved in reading advocacy and finding connections between the roles of school and reading challenges and the mental health of students.
Department literacy team members are also scheduled to hold a breakout learning session during the summit.
Attendees of the Iowa Science of Reading Summit will have an opportunity to earn Iowa Licensure Renewal Credit. To be eligible for licensure renewal credit, teachers must attend the summit, enroll in a licensure renewal course at the event and complete two eLearning modules specified in the course requirements. There is a $50 fee for the Iowa Licensure Renewal Credit opportunity.
The 2024 Iowa Science of Reading Summit will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Convention Complex. Registration for the 2024 Iowa Science of Reading Summit is open through May 29. Cost to register is $350.
