It's time to get "Back on Track" with the college planning process in 2021.

In 2020, we saw a drop in applications and a rise in students and families unsure of next steps, Iowa College Aid and ICAN are here with a series of events to help every Iowa high school student kick off the 2021-22 academic year on the right foot.

Monday, September 20: A World of Options

  • Registered Apprenticeships: Earn While You Learn, 9:00 a.m.
    • Jennifer Gray, Iowa Workforce Development
    • Considering an apprenticeship? Learn everything you need to know during this session. From choosing an apprenticeship that suits your interest to applying for it, Iowa Workforce Development will review the apprenticeship process to help you prepare to Earn While You Learn!

  • Keys to Being Successful in College, 12:00 p.m.
    • Angela Lamb, University of Iowa
    • College is a new experience and can be challenging to navigate when you first start. This session will review some top strategies to being successful and managing this new experience.

  • Freshmen: Class of 2025 Night, 5:30 p.m.
    • Iowa College Access Network (ICAN)
    • Join ICAN and a panel of college representatives, school counselors, and current college students for an interactive discussion that's specific to the freshman year of high school. Experts will provide advice and success tips for navigating freshman year and beyond.

Tuesday, September 21: Applying for your Adventure

    • Working on your Common App? Join this session to review all of the application's components and gain a better understanding of how Common App works, leaving you prepared to complete your Common Application!

    • College pricing is challenging to understand and makes it difficult to budget for actual expenses. Join this session to learn more about why college is priced so high, what goes into the price, and how to best work with college pricing as you continue your college search.

    • First-generation students are students that are the first in their family to attend college. Many Iowan students are first-gen students and we know the reality of their success relies on their independence, management skills, and a smooth transition. Join this session to learn more about how to navigate college as a first-gen student, ask all of your questions, and leave prepared to take on your next venture.

  • College-Going Process, 10:00 a.m.

    • Learn the five steps of the college-going process and how to be successful in completing them. This session will lay out a timeline for your senior year to ensure you complete your college-going tasks!

    • Most students need to have some type of employment while earning their degree. Join this session to learn more about student employment and the difference between working on campus and off campus, working for Work Study jobs and having regular part-time employment.

Sunday, September 26
  • Golden Circle College & Career Fair
    • Iowa College Access Network (ICAN)
    • The largest college and career fair in Iowa is scheduled for Sunday, September 24 at the Meadows Convention Center in Altoona. This event is free to all students and provides a unique opportunity to meet with both career planning experts and college and universities from across the United States.
